About

What TYC is about

The Toronto Youth Cabinet (TYC) is a youth driven advocacy organization which strives to improve the quality of life for Toronto’s youth. In working together with City Councilors and through fostering partnership among youth organizations, the Cabinet is dedicated to providing young people with a forum in which they are able to build an equitable,
youth-friendly Toronto.

TYC membership is open to any youth between the ages of 13 and 24 who live, learn, work, or play in the City of Toronto. Membership is composed of youth that are reflective of Toronto’s youth population, in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, geography, gender, sexual orientation, ability, and economic status. TYC members play an advocacy and lobbying role on behalf of the TYC (i.e. attending City deputations, speaking to committees, meet with City Councilors) and provide access to other youth to do the same. The TYC works from an anti-oppression framework and tries to build a membership that is as inclusive as possible to best reflect all of Toronto’s youth.
Currently the TYC operates from a working group model to ensure that organizational directives are met and that the direction of the TYC is in accordance with yearly objectives.

TYC Decision Making

The TYC uses a consensus decision making model for most group decisions; however motions and voting practices are still used when consensus cannot be reached. All members can put forward motions for group endorsements and group direction. TYC voting status is earned by attending at least 3 TYC meetings and participating in a TYC anti Oppression workshop.

TYC Working Groups

The TYC is currently comprised of 7 main working groups to ensure that the overall direction given from the membership is inline with the TYC’s mission statement, long-term vision, and anti-oppressive framework. Working group leaders collectively lead the development of an annual work plan for the TYC as directed by the membership. Working group members are accountable to the membership regarding the day-to-day activities and initiatives that the membership has decided to support.
